Introducing Cort Davies, Founder of Startup CMO , to Bright Ideas.

This week, to continue our online magazine Bright Ideas, we got to know Cort Davies.

To begin, Cort gave us a small description of what Startup CMO does. Startup CMO is marketing consultancy that works primarily with early stage startups. It help these early stage startups with product market fit, go to market strategies, and customer acquisition.

In this interview, we asked Cort to share his experience in the Business to Business world to help enlighten fellow business people.

When a problem arises, how do you approach it? There are never problems, only challenges. All challenges are learning experiences.

What is an average day at your company? It is a mix between business development and brand building, client meetings and communication, and technical work for current clients.

How do you promote your business?

The best strategies by far are referral, mentoring, and speaking. People in my industry need to trust me so I give away as much free value as possible, which leads to new business.
I am all for them outgrowing me. It means we did our job.

Which channels were the most effective in reaching your customers?

The most effective channels were referrals, partnerships, and speaking. These channels allowed me to be exposed to warm and luke warm leads that were my exact target with the exact challenge I could assist with.

What methods or strategies did you use to create value with your clients?

Giving them as much free advice and strategy up front as possible. Also making everything very measurable so they know where their marketing dollars are being spent and if it is effective.

What strategies were the most effective in retaining your customers?

Retention is easy. If I am generating cost effective leads and customers for my clients, offer them periodic reporting, stay in constant communication, and always optimize to perform better, clients will stay around.
 The 80/20 rules by far. Constantly ask what are the 20% of activities that cause 80% of positive results in all things. Review weekly and eliminate the rest.

How did you create a competitive advantage in your industry?

My services are very niche as they tend to service a market that cannot afford agency pricing. The way I differentiate is by offering digital courses to pre-funded early stage startups to introduce them to my brand. Then offer them tiered services as they raise more money and grow. I can service them at several stages and then pass them off to partner agencies when they outgrow me. I am all for them outgrowing me. It means we did our job.

What are some of your favourite productivity hacks?

The 80/20 rules by far. Constantly ask what are the 20% of activities that cause 80% of positive results in all things. Review weekly and eliminate the rest.

Do you have an extremely useful App you cannot live without?

Gtask Pro, Habit List, and Slack. These tools keep me organized, keep me on track with good daily habits, and keep me in constant communication with my team.

What major challenges did you face? How did you solve them?

Not having enough manpower to work with all my clients. It is a delicate balance between outsource help and hiring new people.
